About

Oval diamonds are brilliant cuts with an elongated rounded outline. They use the same facet pattern as a round brilliant, so the sparkle is familiar, but the shape creates a finger-lengthening effect and spreads weight across a larger surface area. A one-carat oval will typically show more face-up size than a one-carat round. Ovals now account for more fancy-shape engagement ring sales than any other cut, and much of that popularity comes from the shape's versatility: it works in solitaires, halos, three-stone settings , bezel designs, and east-west orientations without losing its visual balance. The oval cut is a modern shape, developed by a Russian cutter named Lazare Kaplan in the late 1950s. It doesn't have the same historical lineage as old European cuts or cushion cuts , but it pairs well with both vintage and contemporary settings. An oval in an Art Deco-style platinum setting with baguette side stones looks completely different from the same shape in a minimal yellow gold solitaire. Our guide to how elongated cuts wear on the hand compares ovals against emerald cuts , marquise , and elongated cushions in detail. The main optical consideration with ovals is the bow-tie effect: a dark band across the center of the stone caused by light leaking rather than reflecting back. Nearly all ovals show some bow-tie. A faint one adds depth; a heavy one makes the center of the stone look dark. The bow-tie isn't captured by GIA grading, so it can only be evaluated by looking at the stone face-up under normal lighting. A guide to choosing the right silhouette for your hand shape and our vintage engagement ring styles guide both include oval-specific comparisons. For rare or unusual diamond cuts beyond the standard shapes, we've covered those as well.
