Extrication and Rescue Gloves Firefighters are frequently called upon to help people and pets escape from collapsed buildings, crashed vehicles, trenches and other dangerous situations. When this time comes, you'll need special fire gloves that protect against cuts, burns and punctures while maintaining the dexterity required to carry out precarious tasks. Extraction gloves were developed especially for rescue operations by firefighters, EMS operators and other first responders. Based on the work gloves long used by automotive mechanics, they offer extreme performance and protection when you need it. What Are Fire Extrication Gloves? Extrication gloves provide the grip and dexterity firefighters need to perform search and rescue operations, especially involving vehicular accidents, collapsed buildings, confined spaces and vertical conditions. These features allow for comfortable, efficient tool handling while protecting the hands, wrists and lower arms from metal shards, broken glass, bodily fluids and hazardous materials. Also called rescue gloves, extrication gloves are based on a hybrid design combining auto racing and automotive repair attributes. They're a departure from the multipurpose structural firefighting glove, providing a greater degree of sensitivity and flexibility without compromising protection. Features of Extrication Gloves Initially made with leather, today's extrication gloves begin with a synthetic foundation - usually Kevlar or Dyneema. From here: Despite their lighter feel, extrication gloves offer anywhere from five to 20 times the cut protection of leather and are reinforced around the palms, sides, thumbs and fingers. In addition to cut protection, construction shields the wearer's hands against abrasions and punctures. Referencing their auto body origins, extrication gloves let rescue workers confidently and reliably grip tools in both wet and dry conditions. Because they're a specialized type of glove, they're quickly slipped on and off
