How to Choose a Martial Arts Uniform Match the style: buy the uniform for your martial art. Karate and taekwondo uniforms are too light for judo or BJJ gripping, and heavy grappling gis are hot and stiff for striking classes. Fabric weight: lighter 8oz cotton/polyester uniforms suit beginners and kids. Heavier 10oz, 14oz canvas and 450gsm to 550gsm grappling weaves last longer and suit regular training and competition. Club and competition rules: many clubs specify colour, collar or brand, and competitions can require approved uniforms. Check with your instructor before you buy.
