Ammonites are among the most enduring forms in the fossil record — appearing over 400 million years ago in the Devonian and surviving until the end-Cretaceous extinction 66 million years ago. As cephalopods, they were relatives of the modern octopus and squid: active predators that dominated ancient seas across nearly every ocean on Earth. Fossil Realm has a longstanding speciality in iridescent Canadian ammolite from Alberta’s Bearpaw Shale, where the original aragonite shell has been replaced over millions of years by vivid ammolite — producing an iridescent surface that makes these among the most visually compelling fossils in existence. We maintain direct relationships with miners in the region and source selectively for preservation, form, and surface character. Additional ammonite material — including pyritized specimens from Germany and spiny and heteromorph examples from Europe — is available periodically through our collection and by private inquiry.
