Auston Matthews is the Toronto Maple Leafs' captain and the most prolific American-born goal scorer in NHL history. The Arizona-raised center was the #1 overall pick in 2016, scored four goals in his very first NHL game (a record for a player's debut), and has since built a resume that includes the 2022 Hart Trophy as league MVP, three Maurice Richard Trophies for most goals in a season, the 2017 Calder as Rookie of the Year, and the captaincy of one of hockey's most storied franchises. His 60-goal 2021-22 season made him the first player born outside Canada to lead the NHL in goals since the modern era began, and his 69-goal 2023-24 campaign was the highest single-season total since Alex Mogilny in 1992-93. The one box left to check is the Stanley Cup — Toronto's playoff run continues to be the story of every Maple Leafs season, and Matthews carries the captain's "C" with that pressure built in.
