Bruce Smith is the NFL's all-time sack leader and one of the greatest defensive ends in football history. The first overall pick of the 1985 NFL Draft out of Virginia Tech, Smith spent 15 of his 19 NFL seasons with the Buffalo Bills, where he made 11 consecutive Pro Bowls, won two Defensive Player of the Year awards (1990 and 1996), helped lead the Bills to four consecutive Super Bowl appearances (XXV-XXVIII), and finished his career with 200 sacks — a record that still stands today. Smith's combination of speed and power off the edge changed how teams blocked elite pass rushers. He finished his career with three seasons with the Washington Redskins (2000-2003), where he broke Reggie White's previous all-time sack record. His induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2009 — first ballot — and the retirement of his #78 jersey by the Bills cemented his status as a Buffalo legend. The card collector's view Smith's flagship rookie is the 1985 Topps #389 , his lone widely-available base rookie from the year he was drafted #1 overall.
