Cale Makar is the Colorado Avalanche's alternate captain and a generational defenseman — already a two-time Norris Trophy winner (2022, 2025), 2022 Conn Smythe Trophy MVP, and 2020 Calder Trophy rookie of the year. Drafted fourth overall in 2017 out of UMass, Makar reached his sixth straight Norris finalist nod by 2024-25, with 92 points (30G, 62A) — the first defenseman with 30 goals in a season since Mike Green in 2008-09. Makar won the Stanley Cup with Colorado in 2022 and claimed the Conn Smythe as playoff MVP — a Bobby Orr-level résumé building line. He's the first defenseman with back-to-back 90-point seasons since Paul Coffey and Al MacInnis in 1989-91. Through his first 400 career games his 428 points trail only Orr and Coffey for blueliners in NHL history.
