Triphane Description: First introduced by Haüy (1801), in his Traité de Minéralogie , Volume 4. Haüy wanted to replace the name spodumene already introduced by d'Andrada (1800) with what he considered a more proper name, "triphane". The name is derived from the Greek "triphanēs", meaning "appearing threefold", pointing to the mineral's characteristically threefold natural cleavages (in three directions), all equally brilliant. The name triphane was used in the 19th and 20th century, especially in French mineralogical literature as a synonym of spodumene. Later in the 20th century the name has been used, especially in USA, as a colorless or yellowish colored variety.
