When installed, the cable must rest 24 inches below the service so that it might not be disturbed by minor movements. UF-B wire's formal name refers to its uses: - U nderground F eeder and B ranch circuit wiring cable Applications: UF-B cable is typically used as an underground feeder cable to distribute power from an existing building to outdoor lighting fixtures, pumps, outbuildings and other outdoor equipment. The cable can also be used as direct burial cable. Its applications are outlined in Article 340 NEC 2008 and NEC 2011. UF-B is rated at 600 volts. Although it is rated at a conductor temperature of 90ºC dry / wet, its ampacity is limited to 60ºC according to the NEC 2008 AND NEC 2011. UF-B may be directly buried or installed where exposed to sunlight. When used as an NM cable it must comply with the requirements in NEC 2008 and NEC 2011 Article 334.
