About
Leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF), a pleiotropic IL‑6 family cytokine, was originally named for its ability to induce differentiation of a mouse myeloid leukemia line but also promotes survival and proliferation of diverse cell typesr. LIF is essential for embryo implantation in mice and plays an important role in reproduction and trophoblast differentiation. In culture, LIF maintains pluripotency and self‑renewal of mouse embryonic stem cells.
