An iron set is a group of golf clubs that consists of a set of numbered irons, typically ranging from a 4 (or 5)-iron to a 9-iron or higher (PW, AW). Irons are characterized by their thin, flat clubheads, which are made of metal (usually steel) and have a grooved face. The number on the iron corresponds to the club's loft, which is the angle of the clubface relative to the shaft. A lower number means a lower loft and a longer distance, while a higher number means a higher loft and a shorter distance. Iron sets are an important part of a golfer's bag because they can be used to hit a wide range of shots, from long, high-lofted approaches to short, low-flying chips around the green.
