Repeated ascent and repositioning twists rope over a working day, and that twist eventually fights back against smooth movement or strains the hardware it's attached to. A swivel breaks that twist before it builds up, though load rating and size need to match the application — a compact swivel for lanyard use isn't built for rigging loads.
