About

Fire Grates A fire grate lifts solid fuel off the base of the fireplace so air can reach it from below, which is what keeps a coal or turf fire burning efficiently rather than smouldering. Basket grates hold the fuel in a curved cage shape and suit an open fireplace burning coal or turf, while lipped grates add a raised front edge that helps stop fuel and ash spilling forward onto the hearth. Heavy-duty grates with four legs are built for daily use over a long season rather than occasional lighting. Beyond the grate itself, a fire brick lines the firebox to protect the brickwork from direct heat and extends the life of the surround, while a coal saver sits inside the grate to reduce the amount of fuel needed to keep a fire going, which is the more direct way to cut fuel costs than any grate design choice. De Vielle supplies basket, lipped and heavy-duty grates in 16 and 18 inch sizes, plus a coal saver. Easi Plumb supplies replacement fire bricks in two sizes.
