About
Floating Shelves A floating shelf hides its fixings, so the bracket sits inside the shelf body and only the board is visible. That look comes with a condition worth knowing before you buy: the load goes entirely into the wall through concealed pins, so the fixing has to suit the wall type. Solid masonry takes the supplied plugs, but plasterboard needs proper hollow wall anchors rated for the weight, and a floating shelf fitted with the wrong fixings will pull away. Length should follow what goes on it rather than the wall available. 60cm suits a small display, a speaker or bathroom items, 80cm is the general purpose size, and 118cm spans an alcove or carries a row of books. Depth is 23.5cm throughout this range, which takes most books and picture frames but not large box files, so measure the deepest item first. Finish decides how forgiving it will be: high gloss looks sharp and wipes clean but shows dust and fingerprints readily, while matt and sand finishes hide both. Where the load is genuinely heavy, twin slotted uprights are the alternative approach: the upright takes the weight into a run of fixings and brackets clip in at any height, so the shelving is adjustable and far stronger, at the cost of visible hardware. Duraline supplies all the floating shelves, each at 23.5cm deep. High gloss finishes cover 60cm in grey and black, 80cm in grey and white, and 118cm in grey and white. Matt finishes cover 60cm in black and 80cm and 118cm in sand. Wall mounted twin slotted shelving uprights are stocked at 320mm, 1600mm and 2250mm for adjustable systems and heavier loads.
