Known for its raw feedback, horsehair padding allowed fighters to adjust their technique, refine their power, and develop precision by feeling the exact placement, angle, and impact of every punch. This constant feedback-improvement loop was instrumental in shaping boxing into the sweet science we know today. The Earliest Horsehair Gloves Before synthetic foam, horsehair padding was the most protective option available, replacing bare-knuckle fighting and crude cotton-filled “mufflers.” This happened in the mid-19th century when Queensberry Rules mandated fighters to wear these gloves for the sake of their safety.
