The University of Memphis, formerly Memphis State University, has a proud athletic tradition. The Tigers' pom squad has won 14 - not a typo - national championships, and their men's soccer and football teams are always competitive. However, Memphis is most known for its men's basketball. The Tigers have made the national championship game twice, led by legends Derrick Rose and Larry Finch.
