The 15 x 15cm square is the size most English wall tiling was done in before large formats arrived, and it remains the most sympathetic choice in a period house. It holds its scale in a small room, it suits a wall that is not perfectly flat, and it is the size most decorative and hand-glazed ranges are still made in. The collection spans Fired Earth's Empress, Original Style's crackle-glazed field tiles and Assyrian patterns, and Ca'Pietra's Aventuras. Why the size still matters Older walls move and are rarely flat. A smaller tile follows an uneven surface far better than a large format, which will either rock or need the wall making good first. In a Victorian bathroom or a cottage kitchen, 15cm is usually the pragmatic answer as well as the sympathetic one. Plain, decorated, or both Most ranges at this size offer plain field tiles and decorated singles designed to be mixed among them. Scattering one decorated tile in every nine or sixteen gives pattern without commitment, costs a fraction of a fully patterned wall, and is far easier to live with over time. Crackle glaze needs sealing A crackle glaze is a deliberately crazed surface, and the crazing is open. In a shower or behind a hob it needs sealing before grouting, or the grout will find the crackle and stain it permanently. Ask us which products in the range this applies to. Setting out At this size a wall of any width will need a cut. Decide before you start whether the cut goes in the corner, under the worktop or above the tiles, and keep it consistent around the room.
