Bathrooms are full of things to tile around: a WC pan, a pedestal, a bath panel, a shower tray. A 40cm square is the largest format that still handles all of that without producing awkward offcuts everywhere, which is why it is such a common size for stone bathroom floors. This is a small, stone-led selection — Fired Earth's Avalon tumbled marble and Cathedral limestone, and Ca'Pietra's Long Island tumbled marble. Tumbled stone in a wet room Tumbled marble and limestone have a softened, slightly irregular surface that gives more grip than a polished stone and looks better as it wears. They are porous, so they must be sealed — before grouting and after — and re-sealed periodically. In exchange you get a floor that improves with age rather than simply ageing. Setting out around the sanitaryware Plan the grid from the most visible edge, usually the doorway or the front of the bath, and let the cuts fall behind the WC and against the least-seen wall. With a 40cm tile there are only so many rows in a typical bathroom, so where the first line sits determines the whole floor. Stone and underfloor heating Stone is an excellent conductor and suits underfloor heating well, but it needs the right adhesive and, on a timber sub-floor, usually a decoupling layer. Tell us the build-up when you order and we will make sure the fixing products match. Expect variation Natural stone varies within a batch — that is the point of it. Ask your fitter to lay the boxes out dry and mix from several at once, rather than working through one box at a time, so the variation is distributed rather than banded.
