Original Style named this glaze after jet, the fossilised wood worked at Whitby and the black material of choice in Victorian jewellery, and their own account of it is the right place to start: their darkest glaze recalls the bottomless depth and clarity of polished jet, and the planes and contours of each tile and moulding are brought to life by deep reflections, in a constant dance of light and shade. That last point is the whole of it. This is not a black that swallows light — it is opaque and mirror-glossy, and it throws the window, the lamp and the metalwork straight back into the room. The flat formats run from the Field Tile and Half Tile through the Large Brick, both bevelled metros and the 152 x 25mm Rectangle slip.
