About

Slate in a bathroom is a small, deliberate range rather than a wall of choice — seven pieces, six of them real slate. That is the honest picture, and it is the right one: riven slate is a difficult bathroom material and we would rather stock the few that work than a shelf of them that do not. What is here Six are natural slate and one is a porcelain slate-effect. Four carry a textured, riven face — the grip that makes slate worth considering on a wet floor in the first place — with one honed, one matt and one tumbled. Six read black or near-black; two are white-veined and one grey. Three come as small-format mosaic sheets, which is how most people use slate in a bathroom: a shower tray, a niche, or a band that grounds a lighter wall. Before you specify it Natural slate is porous and needs sealing, and it will lighten where water sits unless you keep on top of it. On a shower floor that is a maintenance decision, not a design one. If you want the look without the upkeep, the porcelain slate-effect here needs no sealing and can be laid on a wet-room floor without further conversation. If you are tiling a larger area, the wider slate ranges are the better starting point. Free cut samples — worth ordering with slate more than with anything else, because riven stone varies sheet to sheet and a photograph flattens it. Postage £4.99, refunded on tile orders over £50.
