About
Ewa Matyja (b. 1985, Poland) is a contemporary abstract artist based in Bali, Indonesia. Having painted since childhood, Matyja made the decisive choice at age 31 to leave her corporate career to fully dedicate herself to her lifelong artistic passion. Her work reflects diverse influences gathered during her extensive travels across Europe, America, and Asia over a 15-year period. Education Matyja holds a BA (Hons) in Business Studies from Dublin Business School (2013) and completed studies in Graphic Design at the Dublin Institute of Design (2015). Though primarily self-taught as an artist, her formal education in design has informed her compositional approach and visual sensibilities. Inspiration Matyja's work draws inspiration from nature, architecture, culture, and the human condition. Her abstract compositions reflect the emotional complexity and inherent chaos of everyday existence, with each brushstroke telling a narrative of human experience. Her practice represents what she calls "an ongoing exploration and journey of discovery," embracing experimentation and finding beauty in imperfection. This philosophical approach connects her work to Abstract Expressionism, with its emphasis on emotional authenticity and gestural mark-making. Technique Working primarily with mixed media on unprimed canvas, Matyja creates richly textured compositions that showcase the raw beauty of cotton. Her distinctive process involves blending traditional mediums—including acrylics, charcoal, oils, pastels, ink, and heavy-body acrylics—to create depth and dimensional effects. Her dynamic approach involves working intuitively on several pieces simultaneously, allowing for a dialogue between works that pushes boundaries and embraces spontaneity. As she describes it, "There is no going back or correcting process." Exhibitions Matyja has established a growing international presence through exhibitions across multiple continents. Her work has been featured in solo presentations in severa
