Epoxy Resin for Woodworking: Table Top, Deep Pour & Penetrating Formulas Not all epoxy resins are interchangeable. Using the wrong formula for your application is the most common reason epoxy projects fail — a table-top formula poured 2 inches deep will overheat and crack; a deep-pour resin used in a thin film will not cure properly. Understanding the three major categories saves you a ruined slab and a lot of frustration. Table top epoxy (like MAS Table Top Epoxy ) is a thin-film, self-leveling system designed for pour depths up to 1/4 inch per coat. It cures hard and crystal clear, making it ideal for bar tops, desk surfaces, and coating over artwork or inlays. Deep pour epoxy (see MAS Deep Pour and MAS Deep Pour X ) is formulated for thick pours — the slower exothermic reaction allows depths of several inches per pour without cracking. This is the right choice for river tables and casting. Penetrating epoxy (like MAS Penetrating Epoxy ) has extremely low viscosity and soaks into punky, soft, or deteriorated wood to consolidate and stabilize it before machining or coating. Key Steps for a Bubble-Free, Crystal-Clear Pour Warm resin and hardener to 75–80°F before mixing to lower viscosity and improve flow Mix slowly and scrape the sides and bottom of the container to prevent unmixed streaks Use a heat gun or propane torch passed lightly over the surface to pop surface bubbles Work in a dust-free environment and cover pours while curing For coloring your resin, our Epoxy & Pigment collection has mica powders and universal tints.
