Insulation for Steel Framed Agricultural Buildings Insulation in a steel framed agricultural building works as part of the cladding system rather than inside a wall. On a built-up roof or wall the quilt is laid over the liner and closed in by the outer sheet, so the insulation, the fixings holding the system together and the sealants sealing the laps all belong to the same specification. What gets specified depends on the building: poultry housing, a grain store and a barn conversion each place different demands on the build-up. How an agricultural steel frame building is insulated Insulation in an agricultural steel frame building sits inside the cladding system, not inside a wall. On a built-up roof or wall the liner sheet is fixed to the purlins or side rails, the insulation is laid over it, and the outer profiled sheet closes the build-up in on a spacer system. Nothing is concealed and nothing is forgiving. The quilt has to hold full thickness across the whole plane, the laps have to be sealed, and the perimeter has to be closed off properly. That is the trade-off with site-assembled built-up cladding rather than a composite panel: you specify the insulation yourself, so you control the thickness, the facing and the vapour control. It also means the fixings, sealants and upstands are part of the specification, not an afterthought at the end of the order.
