About

Anatomical bridles are shaped to sit around a horse's sensitive facial structures rather than straight across them. The headpiece is curved to lift clear of the poll and the base of the ears, nosebands are contoured away from the facial nerves and cheekbones, and the leather is usually padded and rolled. They are designed to reduce pressure and encourage a more comfortable, settled contact. Just Horse Riders stocks around 38 anatomical and comfort bridles from brands including Premier Equine, Rhinegold, HKM, Cameo Equine, John Whitaker, Collegiate, Eco Rider and LeMieux, from a Premier Equine Verdura Anatomic Cavesson Noseband at £34.20 up to full leather double bridles. An anatomical (or "comfort") bridle is a bridle whose straps have been reshaped to follow the horse's head instead of crossing it in straight lines. Three features define most of them: a curved headpiece that dips away from the poll and the base of the ears, a shaped or cut-back noseband that steers padding away from the cheekbones and the ends of the facial nerves, and generous soft padding under every strap that bears weight. The aim is to spread pressure over a wider, less bony area. Many riders find their horse accepts the bridle and the bit contact more readily as a result, though every horse is an individual.
