They let the emotios of the characters shine through and immerse you in a parallel universe. Zanpakutō, the sword of the shinigami Zanpakutō (斬魄刀) is the name given to the sword of a shinigami. It is a type of spiritual sword used by Shinigami to fight the spirits and demons that threaten humanity. These katanas are unique to their owners and each of them has a spirit that inhabits the sword. The spirit of the Zanpakutō can be used by the Shinigami in battle or for other purposes. A shinigami and his katana can use 2 types of powers: shikai (the sword takes on its true form as a mace, trident, or spear) and bankai (the sword adopts an alternate form that allows for the use of powerful magical powers). The soul that inhabits the katana is a reflection of its owner. Having a strong relationship with the sword allows a shinigami to be powerful and strong in battle.
