About
Earth augers drill round holes in soil quickly. Farmers, landscapers, fencing crews, utility workers and nurseries use them for fence posts, planting trees, signposts, footings and soil sampling. How to choose an earth auger Hole size: small augers and planting bits suit seedlings and small posts. Larger bits are for fence posts, trees and footings. Engine size: 1.1HP to 1.9HP augers are light for one person. 52cc engines and 2HP machines drive larger bits in harder ground. Gasoline or cordless: gasoline augers suit large jobs and remote fields. 20V and 40V cordless augers are quieter and good for gardens and planting. Bits and extensions: check that the bit and extension fit your auger's shaft, and keep spare locking pins. Check for buried cables and pipes before digging, and stop if the bit hits a root or rock. For a few holes or where an engine cannot go, a manual post hole digger is an option.
