About

Zone 11 not only has a great growing season, but it is the second warmest Zone in the whole United States! Being found in only a few places outside of Hawaii such as the Southern tip of Florida and the hottest corners of California, Zone 11 provides a great environment for a host of tropical, warm-loving plant options. In fact, this Zone usually doesn’t freeze throughout its winter, meaning you don’t have to worry about tracking first and last frosts as closely as you do in other regions! Some cities found within Zone 11 include Key Largo, parts of Santa Monica, Wahiawa, and Mililani Town. Like other USDA Hardiness Zones, Zone 11 is split into two subzones based on how cold they can get during their winter month. Zone 11a has a minimum average winter temperature of 40 to 45 degrees F. Zone 11b, denoting warmer areas, has a minimum average winter temperature of 45 to 50 degrees F. When planting in extremely hot temperatures like these, tropical plants are often in the line up of plants that will handle the heat well! Plants that hate the freezes in other areas love the temperatures here, however on the other hand you have to take precautions that the hot sun doesn’t hurt more sun-sensitive plants. Leaves can burn, similarly to how we get sunburnt!
