Tracheostomy is a medical procedure where a small surgical opening, known as a stoma, is created in the front of the neck to provide a direct airway passage into the trachea. This procedure is commonly performed in situations where a patient's natural airway is blocked or compromised, often due to respiratory conditions, trauma, or surgeries. A tracheostomy tube is then inserted into the stoma to maintain an open airway, allowing the patient to breathe more easily. Tracheostomies can be temporary or permanent, depending on the patient's condition and the underlying cause. They are commonly used in intensive care units, long-term care facilities, and home settings to assist patients with breathing difficulties or those requiring prolonged ventilatory support.
