The Development of Bicycles Through the Years The bicycle's history spans over two centuries, with its invention attributed to Karl von Drais, who created the first steerable, two-wheeled vehicle in 1817. Known as the Draisine or Dandy Horse, this early version of the bicycle lacked pedals, requiring riders to push themselves along with their feet. In 1839, Scottish blacksmith Kirkpatrick MacMillan added pedals to the design, which allowed riders to propel the vehicle without touching the ground. The next major innovation came in the form of the Penny-Farthing in the 1870s, which featured a large front wheel and a much smaller rear wheel. Although the Penny-Farthing was fast, it was unstable and dangerous to ride, leading to the development of the safety bicycle. The safety bicycle, introduced in the 1880s, had equal-sized wheels and a chain drive that powered the rear wheel. This design forms the foundation of modern bicycles.
