Double sided gas fireplaces are open on two opposite faces, so a single firebox finishes two rooms and the fire is visible from both. Manufacturers also call them see-through or pass-through. They are the reason a wall between a living room and a dining room can stop being a wall and start being a feature. Two-sided is not the same as three-sided The distinction matters because the installations are completely different. A double sided unit is open on two opposite faces and lives inside a wall, seen from the rooms on either side. A three-sided or bay unit is open on the front plus both ends and sits at the end of a wall or a peninsula, seen from one room. If the fireplace has to serve two separate rooms, you need a double sided model, and no amount of clever placement makes a three-sided one do that job.
