What Is a Lexington Hearth Mantel? Lexington Hearth mantels are cast from Burncrete, a patented non-combustible formulation manufactured in Lexington, Kentucky. Each mantel replicates the texture and detail of aged wood or stone while meeting ASTM E136 non-combustibility standards, so it can be installed closer to the firebox than a traditional wood mantel in many cases. The Casting Process: Hand-Cast, Hand-Painted Every mantel is molded from real timber or stone to capture authentic grain lines, tool marks, checks, and knots, then hand-cast and hand-painted by Lexington Hearth's coloring artists to recreate the weathered look of aged material. A center air gap in the casting reduces overall weight and limits heat transfer to the surface, which is what makes these mantels noticeably lighter than solid concrete despite their realistic, substantial look. Shelf Styles vs. the Hitching Post Surround Most Lexington Hearth mantels, including the Grist Mill, Tobacco Barn, Rickhouse, and Cabin Pine, are flush mantel shelves designed for wall mounting. The Hitching Post is the collection's full mantel surround, including top and side mantel pieces for a more traditional, framed look. Finishes and Sizes Faux wood styles are available in up to five finishes: Maduro, Pale Honey, Weathered Grey, Eclipse, and Roasted Chestnut, with the exact options varying by model. The Rockface mantel, styled after natural limestone, comes in two stone tones instead: Bluegrass Fog and Turfway Tan. Sizes vary by model, from 4' to 6' lengths or 48" to 84" widths depending on the style, with custom sizing available on request. Indoor and Outdoor Use Because Burncrete is a non-combustible, concrete-based material, Lexington Hearth mantels are designed for indoor use or covered outdoor installations, such as a covered patio or porch.
