DEVO, formed in Akron, Ohio in 1973, are pioneering new wave innovators whose blend of art-punk, synth-pop, and biting satire made them one of the most distinctive bands of their era. Rooted in the concept of “de-evolution,” their music and visuals combined absurdist humor, science fiction kitsch, and sharp social critique. With hits like “Whip It” from their 1980 album Freedom of Choice , iconic energy dome helmets, and groundbreaking music videos, DEVO helped shape the MTV age and influenced generations of alternative, industrial, and electronic artists, remaining active and culturally resonant.
