This can be anywhere from September to November, depending on your growing zone and climate. Can You Leave Crocus Bulbs in the Ground All Winter? Growing zones 3 to 8 can leave Crocus plants in the ground, or even in a large planter. This is possible because Crocus bulbs require at least six to eight weeks of what’s known as “chill hours” before they will sprout. But there are some exceptions to the in-ground chill: If you are in a hardiness zone where it can get too cold, dig up your Crocus and store them in soil or a mesh bag in a cold garage, cellar or shed. If you’re in a zone where there are not enough chill hours in winter, dig up bulbs and store them in a well-ventilated bag in a refrigerator.
