About
Nakagawa Gofun was founded in 1898, and generations later, is still run by a member of the Nakagawa family. Based in Uji (near Kyoto), the company manufactures traditional Japanese watercolours paints (gansai) and pigments of the highest quality. Their products have traditionally been associated with Nihonga painting. Nihonga is a Japanese style of painting that typically uses mineral pigments, and occasionally ink, together with other organic pigments on silk or paper. The term was coined during the Meiji period to differentiate it from its counterpart, known as Yōga or Western-style painting. The term translates to "pictures in a Japanese style."
