Last Updated: Monday 26th October 2026 What Are Amino Acids? Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. There are 20 amino acids used to make protein, and 9 of these are called essential amino acids (EAAs) because the body can't make them, so they need to come from food. The other 11 are non-essential amino acids, which the body can make itself. Some, such as glutamine, are known as conditionally essential. Amino acid supplements provide specific amino acids in a measured serve, usually as a flavoured powder you mix with water, or as capsules and unflavoured powders. At Nutrition Warehouse, we stock amino acid supplements from Genetix Nutrition, Optimum Nutrition, Xtend, EHP Labs, Switch Nutrition, Anabolix Nutrition and more. Want to see which ones customers rate highest? Check out our Top 10 Amino Acids . Types of Amino Acid Supplements Amino acid supplements fall into four main groups. Here's how they compare: Type What it contains Common format EAAs All 9 essential amino acids Flavoured powder BCAAs 3 essential amino acids: leucine, isoleucine and valine Flavoured or unflavoured powder, capsules Amino blends EAAs or BCAAs with extras such as electrolytes or caffeine Flavoured powder Single amino acids One amino acid, such as glutamine, citrulline or beta-alanine Unflavoured powder, capsules Formulas vary by product, so always check the label for the amino acids and amounts in each serve. BCAAs vs EAAs: What's the Difference? BCAAs (branched-chain amino acids) are 3 of the 9 essential amino acids: leucine, isoleucine and valine. EAA supplements contain all 9 essential amino acids, including the 3 BCAAs. Many BCAA products list a 2:1:1 ratio, meaning twice as much leucine as isoleucine and valine. Choose an EAA if you want all 9 essential amino acids in one serve. Choose a BCAA if you specifically want leucine, isoleucine and valine, often in a flavoured drink to sip while training. Some products combine both, so check the label to see exactly what's in each
