Reading lights are designed to put useful illumination on a book, document, e-reader or nearby work surface without requiring the whole room to be brightly lit. They can take different forms, including desk lamps, directional spotlights, bedside fixtures and portable rechargeable lamps. The best depends on where you read and how precisely you need to direct the light. What makes a good reading light? A useful reading light should provide enough light on the reading material, allow sensible positioning, and avoid placing the brightest part of the source directly in the reader's line of sight. Depending on the product, adjustability, beam angle, colour temperature, flicker control and portability can make a difference. Exact features vary by model. Reading lights for books in bed For reading in bed, a compact directional or adjustable light is usually easier to position than a broad room light. A bedside spotlight can be aimed toward the book, while a table lamp can sit on a nearby nightstand. If the bed is shared, positioning matters: the useful light should fall on the reading material without unnecessarily shining across the room. Reading lights for study tables and desks On a study or work desk, a desk lamp can keep the reading area illuminated without requiring the ceiling light to do all the work. A flexible or adjustable light is useful when the reading position changes. Where a spotlight is used, check its beam angle and placement so the light covers the material rather than creating a small overly bright spot. Adjustable and directional reading lights Directional lights are useful when the exact location of the reading material changes.
