Surface lights are fixtures mounted directly onto the ceiling or wall surface rather than installed inside a ceiling cutout. They are especially useful for homes and offices where there is no false ceiling, where the existing ceiling should not be cut, or where a visible, low-profile fixture is preferred. Surface mounting describes how the fixture is installed; the fixture itself can still be a panel, COB downlighter, linear light or another form.
