Planting & Growing Trees In Pots Some trees ideal for growing in pots include; dwarf Flowering Cherry trees, small Japanese Maples, compact Conifers, weeping Crab Apple trees and Magnolia shrubs. Patios are ideal places for growing small trees in containers because they are so often sheltered and sunny spots where many trees do particularly well. This is why trees suitable for growing in pots are often called "patio trees". Just make sure Japanese Maples aren't in strong sunlight that can scorch the delicate foliage. When planting a tree into a pot or container, we recommend using one that is about twice the size of the root ball. For large planters, you may want to plant the tree in situ, as they will be heavy once full. Make sure the pot contains drainage holes in the base and if not, add your own. Potted trees depend on you for feeding and watering. Keep them well watered all year round and particularly in summer when their soil can dry out very quickly. We also recommend feeding with a general purpose fertiliser twice a year. Keep the pot free from weeds and grass so the tree is not in competition for the available water and nutrients.
