Choosing the right cast kit depends on the location and severity of the injury. Each cast type is designed to immobilize specific areas while providing optimal support during the healing process. Arm Cast Kits - Upper Extremity Immobilization Short Arm Cast (SAC): Extends from below the elbow to the metacarpal heads (knuckles), immobilizing the wrist and forearm while allowing elbow movement. The short arm cast is the most common upper extremity cast and is essential for wrist fractures (including distal radius and Colles' fractures), scaphoid fractures, carpal bone injuries, and post-operative wrist immobilization. This cast provides excellent wrist stability while maintaining elbow function for daily activities. Long Arm Cast (LAC): Extends from the upper arm to the hand, immobilizing the elbow, forearm, and wrist in a fixed position. The long arm cast prevents both elbow and wrist movement, making it critical for elbow fractures, humerus fractures, radius and ulna fractures, severe forearm injuries, and post-operative immobilization after elbow or upper arm surgery. The elbow is typically positioned at 90 degrees for optimal healing and patient comfort. Leg Cast Kits - Lower Extremity Immobilization Short Leg Cast (SLC): Extends from below the knee to the toes, immobilizing the ankle and foot at a 90-degree angle while allowing knee movement.
