Advanced ceramic materials are the next generation of ceramics. With precisely controlled composition, these inorganic, non-metallic, mostly crystalline materials are highly refined to give specific desirable features. Encompassing oxides, non-oxides and composite materials, advanced ceramics are suitable for a range of applications depending on their specific properties. A strength of advanced ceramics is their ability to be tailored and engineered to access highly desirable properties for various applications. Within literature advanced ceramics are often referred to as technical ceramics, high-tech ceramics, high-performance ceramics, engineering ceramics or fine ceramics. They are currently being explored across a range of applications including, structural engineering in automotive and aerospace industries due to their high wear resistance. Their highly functional surfaces are exploited for their microstructural effects including, semiconductivity, varistor behavior, piezoelectricity, pyroelectricity, ferroelectricity, and superconductivity. They are also widely used in coatings including for biological environments such as dentistry and orthopedics.
