Rain shells — the layer you pull on over the gear you're already wearing when the sky turns. Lightweight jackets, overpants and one-piece suits that pack down small enough to live under the seat and come out when you need them. These are not armoured and they are not a substitute for a riding jacket. They go over the top of it, which is exactly why they work: you keep your protection, you stay dry, and you take the shell off when the rain stops.
