Most enclosure problems come down to heat and light, so start there. Heating runs from heat mats and cords for small plastic tubs up to ceramic and spiral heat emitters for larger glass terrariums; emitters give off infra-red heat with virtually no visible light, which suits nocturnal species and lets you heat overnight without disturbing the animal. Every heat source needs a thermostat — an on/off unit is fine for a mat, while a dimming or pulse-proportional unit is the safer choice for a ceramic emitter, which runs hot enough to burn if it is left unregulated. Heat emitters produce no UVB, so lighting is a separate decision. T5 HO UVB fittings and tubes are the standard for basking species such as bearded dragons; UV output falls away long before the tube stops lighting up, so replace tubes on a schedule rather than waiting for them to fail. LED Pro bars add visible light and plant growth for bioactive or heavily planted setups but do not replace a UVB tube. For the inside of the enclosure, match the substrate to the species — coco peat and sphagnum moss hold humidity for tropical species and hatchlings, while desert sands and bark suit arid setups. Foam backgrounds , cork and rock hides, branches and artificial plants add cover and climbing height, which matters more to a stressed animal than floor space does.
