The canned insects are the part people most often misuse. Exo Terra's own feeding guide treats them as part of a varied diet or a treat two to three times a week, not as a whole diet, and asks you to discard any uneaten portion after 24 hours and refrigerate the can once opened. They differ enough to be worth choosing between: mealworms run about 19.4% protein and 7.2% fat, silkworms 18.5% and 13.3%, superworms 19% and 13.9%. The pellet diets are the opposite case — Exo Terra formulates them as complete and fortified, so no additional food supplements are needed alongside them. Calcium deserves a word. Exo Terra describes calcium deficiency as a major dietary problem in captive reptiles, and its Calcium + D3 powder is intended to be dusted onto insects or blended through vegetables and fruit. Vitamin D3 matters most for animals not exposed to natural sunlight or UV lighting, but the right dosing and the right lighting are species-specific — check what your animal needs, and ask a reptile vet if you are unsure.
