Wet food is worth feeding to most cats. They have a weak thirst drive and take most of their moisture from food, so wet food does hydration work that a water bowl often doesn't. It matters most for cats with any history of urinary or kidney trouble. Complete or complementary Check the pack before anything else. Complete means it's a full diet and can be all your cat eats. Complementary means it's a topper, designed to go alongside a complete food, and it isn't nutritionally balanced on its own. Cats can't make certain nutrients for themselves and need them supplied in food, so a cat fed only complementary pouches for months can genuinely run short. Both types are on this page and both are perfectly good products. They just aren't interchangeable. Gravy, jelly, pâté or mousse With cats, texture usually matters more than flavour. Most form a preference as kittens and stick to it stubbornly for life. If your cat turns down a new food, try the same flavour in a different texture before you write it off. A cat who refuses jelly will often eat pâté quite happily. Serve it warm This is the single easiest fix for a cat who picks at wet food. Cats evolved eating prey at body temperature, and food straight from the fridge smells of almost nothing to them. Let it stand for twenty minutes, or stir in a spoonful of warm water. Smell drives appetite in cats far more than taste does. Related: don't leave wet food down all day. It dries out, stops smelling appetising and attracts flies. Put it down, give it half an hour, then lift what's left. Don't buy the big box first There are boxes of eighty and a hundred and twenty pouches on this page and they're excellent value once you know your cat will eat them. Before that, they're a large gamble on an animal famous for changing its mind. Buy a small pack or a multipack selection, find out what actually gets eaten, then buy in bulk.
