Following John F. Kennedy’s assassination, the decision was made to honor America’s 35 th president on a circulating coin. The obverse of the Kennedy half dollar by Gilroy Roberts depicts a left-facing portrait of Kennedy encircled by liberty, in God we trust and the date of issue. Frank Gasparro’s reverse displays the presidential coat of arms. Issues minted for circulation in 1964 were 90% silver, while those struck 1965-1970 were silver clad and coins 1971-date are copper-nickel clad (save a few silver-clad pieces struck in error).
