About
Designed by Charles E. Barber, the Chief Engraver of the United States Mint at the time, Liberty Head nickels (or V nickels) are one of America’s most infamous coins. When first released in 1883, they bore only a large Roman numeral “V” on the reverse for the denomination. So, to prevent con artists from gold plating the coins and passing them off as $5 gold pieces, the Mint quickly added the word “cents” to the design. The coin’s classic obverse depicts Liberty wearing a coronet surrounded by 13 stars. At Profile Coins, we have a wide range of V nickels for sale by year, condition, Mint location, and more, all with a 14-day satisfaction guarantee. Learn More
