About
For more than 50 years, U.S. half dollars bore Christian Gobrecht’s classic Seated Liberty motif. Struck 1839-1891 in 90% silver, the series gets its name from its obverse that shows Liberty seated on a rock. She holds a Union Shield, a ribbon inscribed LIBERTY and a Liberty cap on a pole. 13 stars and the date of issue surround her. The reverse depicts an American eagle with Union Shield, an olive branch and three arrows. Encircling the design are UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and HALF DOLLAR. Over the years, modifications to the design created five distinct varieties – including the addition of the motto IN GOD WE TRUST in 1866. Learn More
