Hydration activates the seed, warmth triggers growth, and airflow lets it respire as the taproot emerges. When any one of them drifts — too dry, too cold, too stagnant — germination slows, turns uneven, or fails outright. Most methods control one and leave the other two to chance. A paper towel dries out. A plastic bag holds moisture but traps stale air, which is what causes mould and damping-off. A heat mat warms a broad area at a fixed output you can't set.
