Angel fish, Pterophyllum, are a small genus of freshwater fish from the family Cichlidae. All Pterophyllum species originate from the Amazon Basin, Orinoco Basin and various rivers throughout tropical South America. Angelfish are one of the most commonly kept freshwater aquarium fish, as well as the most commonly kept cichlid . They are praised for their unique shape, color, and finnage, and are so named because of the graceful way they float around an aquarium.
