About

A collet for your CNC is a key machine tool for your CNC spindle. It allows you to carry out a wide range of applications with just one machine by letting you switch tools easily. Collets are a type of clamp and are designed to hold a tool or workpiece in place to provide excellent precision. These act as the connector between the machine and the bit you’re using and use spring steel with a cylindrical inner surface and a conical outer surface. The tool fits against the inner surface, and the outer surface fits into the machine, which is tightened with an external nut to contract the inner surface around the tool for a secure and constant self-centralising pressure. Collets are known to be a superior type of chuck for machine tools because they’re the only ones that constantly and reliably offer a strong clamping force. These give you a self-centring effect with a very low run-out to resist loosening and still allow you to swap tools quickly. While other types of chuck let you have one clamp to fit a wide range of tool sizes, collets are made for specific tool sizes or a smaller range of sizes, which is why they are provided in singles for one tool or sets for you to have a collet for every tool.
